Uff!  The job market has been incredibly challenging for several years now, and unfortunately, it's only getting worse.

From my experience with the LinkedIn algorithm, job search posts attract two extremes: quick searches and looong searches. It's hard to parse through the lucky stories and horror stories to understand what is reasonable and realistic to expect in a job search today. Here is some recent and realistic information about my data job search.  Hopefully, this can help others plan their job search and set realistic expectations, to not be too frustrated or disappointed.  It's rough out there, so take care of yourself!

I was 🍀lucky🍀 I found a great job I'm excited about in a relatively short amount of time in this job market. However, ✨I will own my sparkles and say that some of my success had to do with my skills and relationships, both in data and in marketing my data self.

Check out my LinkedIn profile if you have questions about the skills, experience, and education I brought into my search to get these results. Don't be afraid to creep back in time to see the posting and networking I did to champion my value and get noticed by the right people. I plan to share more about my specific strategies in the coming months.

  • Teaser: Within 3 hours of being laid off, I had an entire job search plan and a full checklist (logistics, updates, outreach, etc.) written up in the notes app on my phone. Perhaps I over-function as a coping mechanism and it was unhealthy not to take time off initially, but I got the results I wanted quickly... sooo... just do what feels authentic and best to you in those moments! My action-mode advice will be ready whenever you're ready.

I’m NOT desensitized to how many super-smart and hard-working people have been looking for a job, even a bridge job, for a looong long long time. I empathize. This market is [insert adjective of your choice here].  This was my second layoff/termination/separation. And it likely won't be my last.

I will continue to share strategies and resources that helped my search in the hopes that they can help others, and I will always amplify job-seeking voices!

If there's anything I can do to help your job search (an intro to a connection, a data resume review, fresh eyes on your profile, etc.) please don't hesitate to reach out! So many people helped me in so many ways big and small during my job search, and I want to pay that back, forward, and sideways as much as I can! I also love meeting new career friends, especially fellow data nerds! 🤓
